What is the levy?
CITB-ConstructionSkills collects an annual levy from all liable employers within the construction industry whose total wage bill is £80,000 or more. Grants are given to employers who develop and train their staff. This is seen by the construction industry as the best way to support training.
The grants exist in order to ensure the long term growth and development of the construction industry by means of a dedicated scheme to pay for the costs of training and development.
All employers who are registered with and in-scope to ConstructionSkills can claim grant, even those employers who pay no Levy.
As a general rule, it is the smaller firms who train most new entrants. The larger companies can then benefit by hiring these skilled workers later in their career. Without ConstructionSkills Grant, the small firms would simply not be able to afford to train any operatives and the industry as a whole would suffer.
If your wage bill is less than £80,000, you don't have to pay a ConstructionSkills Levy but you still qualify for grants, advice and support.
How is Levy calculated
If your wage bill (including payments to labour-only sub-contractors) is £80,000 or more per year, you are liable to pay a levy.
The Levy rates are 0.5% of your wage bill for direct employees and 1.5% of the value of any wages to labour-only sub-contractors.
